Maelgwn ap Rhys († 1295)
Maelgwn ap Rhys († 1295 ) was a leader of the Welsh Rebellion from 1294 to 1295 .
He was a descendant of Maelgwn ap Rhys of the Dinefwr dynasty and a son of Rhys Fychan , the last lord of Geneu'r Glyn in northern Cardiganshire . When in 1294 a general rebellion broke out in Wales against English rule, led by Madog ap Llywelyn in North Wales and Morgan ap Maredudd in Glamorgan , Maelgwn took over the leadership of the insurgents in Cardiganshire. The Cardiganshire uprising included a violent but unsuccessful siege of Aberystwyth Castle and raids on Carmarthenshire and Pembrokeshire . In the early summer of 1295 the uprising collapsed because of the superiority of the English troops, and Maelgwn fell fighting against troops of the Earl of Gloucester at Carmarthen . His two brothers Rhys and Gruffydd were captured by the English and were still in dungeon at Norwich Castle in 1308 .
