Sebastian Nebe

Sebastian Nebe (* 1982 in Blankenburg im Harz ) is a German painter who lives and works in Berlin and Leipzig.

Career

Sebastian Nebe began studying graphics and painting at the University of Art and Design in Halle in 2002 . From 2005 he studied in the visual arts class with Astrid Klein at the Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig , interrupted by a study visit to the Glasgow School of Art in 2008. Sebastian Nebe received his diploma in 2009 and was a master student of Astrid Klein until 2012 . From 2007 to 2010 he was a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation.

In 2013 Sebastian Nebe received the 10th Art Prize of the Leipziger Volkszeitung . The prize is awarded in cooperation with the Leipzig Museum of Fine Arts and the winner is selected by an independent jury of experts.

Since studying at the HGB Leipzig, Sebastian Nebe's work, be it large-format paintings in oil on paper, Super 8 films or expansive sculptures, revolves around the question of identity in a cinematic manner. Inspired by film noir and contemporary filmmakers such as David Lynch or Lars von Trier as well as by Sigmund Freud's theory of the (un) secret, his are with the help of the above. Generations designed series projection surfaces for different states of mind and hidden stories. The visual language of his paintings is reduced and, despite the traditional glaze technique, has something comic-like and therefore very contemporary in its graphic appearance. His films and objects complement the paintings and transport Nebe's themes into the room as backdrops.

Since the series Untitled (Settings) from 2007, Sebastian Nebe's paintings show and reflect mysterious, abandoned places or landscapes with human relics. The painting entitled Am Morgen , which is in the Alison and Peter W. Klein Collection in the Museum of Art, is an example of his preoccupation with the forest theme . This work “is reminiscent of Caspar David Friedrich's paintings in terms of the structure and color , but denies any romanticism by addressing the destroyed forest”.

With the series Always crashing in the same car (2015), the examination of the human image returns to Sebastian Nebe's painting.
