Magdalena Skipper is a British geneticist and editor-in-chief of the journal Nature . She is the first woman at the top in the magazine's 150-year history. She was previously the editor of Nature Reviews Genetics and the open access journal Nature Communications .

Life

Skipper holds a bachelor's degree in genetics from the University of Nottingham . She received her PhD from Cambridge University in 1998 , where she worked in Jonathan Hodgkin's laboratory. There she investigated the sex determination of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans . She is a member of Corpus Christi College at Cambridge University.

Career and research

After completing her PhD, she joined the Molecular Biology Laboratory of the Medical Research Council at Cambridge University. She worked briefly as a postdoctoral fellow at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund and studied the notch signaling pathway of zebrafish in bowel development.

Skipper came in 2001 as deputy editor for the area to Nature Reviews Genetics Nature . While working as an editor, she interviewed several high profile academics, including Anne McLaren , Mario Capecchi and Oliver Smithies . She was named Editor-in-Chief of Nature Reviews Genetics in 2002 and promoted to Deputy Editor in 2008.

In 2018, she created a global award for women in science in partnership with Nature and the Estée Lauder Companies . In May 2018, she succeeded Philip Campbell as Nature's first female editor-in-chief in its 150-year history.
