Margaret Beryl Jones, Baroness Jones of Whitchurch (born May 22, 1955 in Cardiff , South Wales ) is a British politician, member of the Labor Party , in which she chaired from 2000 to 2001 and has been a member of the House of Lords since 2006.

Life

Margaret Beryl Jones was born in Cardiff on May 22, 1955 . Her father, Bill Jones , worked in the coal mine of Sirhowy Valley and was a unionist and Labor Party member throughout his life . Maggie , as she called later that attended Whitchurch High School in Cardiff and 18 years, the University of Sussex in Falmer in the County of East Sussex .

After completing her studies, she first worked for the National Union of Bank Employees in Cardiff , later for them in London , where she switched to the National Union of Public Employees (NUPE), a union for the public sector. She later worked for UNISON , the largest trade union in Great Britain.

She was a member of the Labor Party National Executive Committee from 1993 to 2005, a member of the Local Government Committee from 1996 to 2004 and the Housing, Transport and the Regions Commission from 1999 to 2004. She chaired the Labor Party in 2000 and 2001 Party and was then a member of Labor's Joint Policy Committee from 2003 to 2005 .

In the general election of 2005 , Maggie Jones lost a constituency that Labor believed was safe. Blaenau Gwent , won by Labor in 2001 with 72.0%, had to surrender it with only 32.2% and take second place.

Since 2001 she has been the Labor Party spokeswoman for education, culture, media and sport.
