Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson

Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson (born May 8, 1961 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic geophysicist and professor at the University of Háskóli Íslands in Reykjavík. He was elected to the Academia Europaea in 2019 .

School and education

Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson completed his school education in 1981 with the Abitur examination at the Menntaskóli við Sund in Reykjavík. He then studied geophysics at the University of Iceland and completed his studies with a final examination for a Bachelor of Science (BS) at Háskóli Íslands in 1986. He then continued his studies in geophysics until 1990 at University College London . This was followed by his doctorate in 1992, in which he dealt with the Icelandic volcano Grímsvötn .

Work areas

From 1980 to 1984 Magnús Tumi Guðmundsson worked at the state institution Orkustofnun . From 1982 to 1983 he worked as a part-time math teacher at Menntaskólinn við Sund. From 1985 to 1986 he worked with the study of glaciers for the natural science department of the Háskóli Íslands (Raunvísindastofnun). From 1988 to 1989 he was a part-time teacher at University College in London and at the same time worked for Orkustofnun with measurements for construction work.

Since 1995 he has been a lecturer at the Háskóli Íslands, and since 2002 he has held a chair for geophysics there.

His scientific focus is on the investigation of glaciated volcanoes.

Publications

In addition to a large number of scientific results, he published the book Fjallamennska (about mountaineering) in 1982 together with Ari Trausti Guðmundsson . He also wrote texts for illustrated books, including

family

His brother Már Guðmundsson has been head of the Icelandic Central Bank ( Seðlabankastjóri ) since 2009 and succeeded Davíð Oddsson and the Norwegian Svein Harald Øygard in this position .
