Magne Gunnar Hegdal (born December 27, 1944 in Gjerdrum ) is a Norwegian composer , pianist and music critic .

Life

Hegdal studied piano with Nicolai Dirdal (1957–1965) and Erling Westher (1966–1969) and composition with Conrad Baden (1964–1967) and Finn Mortensen (1966–1968 privately, then until 1972 at the Oslo Conservatory). He made his debut as a pianist in 1969. From 1969 to 1985 he wrote articles as a music critic for the newspaper Dagbladet . Between 1985 and 1990 and 1998–1999 he taught composition at the Norwegian Academy of Music . For many years he held key positions in the Norwegian Composers' Association and the copyright organization TONO.

Even during his student days, Hegdal was interested in the use of aleatoric music in music , stimulated by John Cage and others . He is one of the few Norwegian composers who turned away from the classical-romantic understanding of form in music and problematized the importance of form for the work of composition in a radical deconstruction . A large part of his roughly fifty compositions are piano works. The vocal compositions Air - Til en gotisk katedral and Make Believe Rag are frequently performed . His herbarium , created between 1974 and 2002, was recorded by the pianist Herbert Henck . Hegdal sees painting and drawing as a continuation of the compositional technique. They were part of a performance concert in 1985. In 2017 he had a joint exhibition in Oslo with the sculptor and graphic artist Wenche Gulbransen .
