The magnifying transmitter , also known as the Tesla magnifier , was an electrotechnical setup by Nikola Tesla in his laboratory in Colorado Springs around 1899 to generate high-frequency high voltage by means of resonance superelevation .

The Tesla magnifier is essentially a form of the Tesla transformer , although the transformer part is separated from the output-side resonance circuit. This makes insulation problems more manageable and efficiency can be increased.

The name goes back to notes in Tesla's diary about his work in Colorado Spring.

By the time around 1899, Tesla had come to believe that it had found a functioning “world energy system”. His goal was to use high-frequency energy, i.e. electromagnetic waves according to today's understanding , for energy distribution, which works over short distances but is associated with great losses.

In December 1899, some pictures of his magnifying transmitter were taken for advertising purposes in and around the laboratory by the chief photographer of the then renowned Century Magazine Dickenson V. Alley. Tesla moved to New York on January 7, 1900 and left the lab as it was. Tesla did not pay the outstanding utility bills to the local electricity company or the outstanding wages of its workers, so five years later he was charged with this debt and the facilities and materials of the magnifying transmitter were sold as building materials.

Around 1901, Tesla began building the Wardenclyffe Tower in Long Island with the financial support of JP Morgan , an even larger facility with an identical functional principle, but which was not completed.
