Magtymguly Pyragy ( Persian : مختوم‌قلی فراغی Makhtumqoli Faraghi ; Russian : Machtumkuli ; * approx. 1730 in Gonbad-e Qabus ; † approx. 1800 in Golestan ) was a Turkmen poet and Sufi of the 18th century . He is considered the country's national poet and had a great influence on the political self-determination of his people. Magtymguly Pyragy as probably the most important classical poet of the Turkmen in their language made the connection between folk and art poetry.

Magtymguly Pyragy was the son of Döwletmämmet Azady. He was buried in Aq Taqeh-ye Qadim.

aftermath

The May 18 , the birthday of Magtymguly possible Pyragy, is a national holiday in Turkmenistan. The Turkmen State University in Ashgabat is named after Magtymguly (founded in 1950, full name Turkmen Magtymguly State University ). His texts were u. a. Translated by Arseni Alexandrowitsch Tarkowski (1907–1989).
