Mahee Island ( Irish Inis Mochaoi , named after the monastery founder Mochaoi) is the largest island in a group in Strangford Lough , a huge natural harbor and bird sanctuary. The island is located near Comber in County Down or in the district of Ards and North Down in Northern Ireland . It is connected to the mainland via the neighboring island of Reagh Island and dams.
Mahee Island is the location of the early Irish monastery Nendrum and Mahee Castle from 1570. In the tidal area in front of Mahee Island there is a fish wall built by the monks . Today the former island is especially known for the beautiful golf course on the eastern edge.
Mahee Island traditionally forms a townland in the civil parish Tullynakill of the barony of Castlereagh Lower , County Down.
