Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena ( Tamil மஹிந்த யாப்பா அபேவர்தன ; born October 10, 1945 ) is a Sri Lankan politician of the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Life

Abeywardena graduated from the University of Colombo and is a large landowner by profession. Between 1983 and 1988 he was a member of the Sri Lankan parliament for the United National Party (UNP) for the first time and then became involved as a politician in the southern province , where he was first chairman of the provincial council from 1993 to 1994 and then as the successor to Amarasiri Dodangoda between September 1994 and his replacement by HG Sirisena on December 21, 2001 Chief Minister of the Southern Province. In the election of December 5, 2001 , he was again a member of parliament for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SFLP) and has since represented the Matara constituency there .

After serving as Deputy Minister of Health between 2004 and 2005, Abeywardena became Minister for Cultural Affairs and National Heritage in Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake's government in November 2005 . In the subsequent government of Prime Minister DM Jayaratne , he took over the post of Minister of Agriculture in January 2010, which he held until the end of Jayaratne's term in January 2015. Subsequently, between February and May 2015, he briefly held the post of Minister for Parliamentary Affairs in the third government of Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe . He then left the SFLP and joined the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA). He is currently a member of the Public Petitions Committee.
