The parent company of today's brewery was founded in 1890 as the San Miguel Corporation beer brewery in the Filipino capital Manila (until 1898 Spanish) in the district of San Miguel and named after it.

In 1946, Enrique Suárez Rezola founded the Spanish company La Segarra SA in Lleida as a subsidiary specializing in the production of malt. In 1953 in Manila the economic independence of the company La Segarre was signed by the parent company San Miguel Corporation.

From 1957 a purely Spanish beer was brewed under the company name La Segarra SA in Lleida ( Catalonia ); in 1957 the name was changed to San Miguel, Fábricas de Cerveza y Malta, SA and the first independent beer brand, the San Miguel Especial, was introduced on the Spanish market. In 1966, with the opening of a second brewery in Málaga and from 1970 a third brewery in Burgos, a considerable expansion of the market position took place.

In November 2000, San Miguel and the other large Spanish brewery Mahou merged to form the Mahou San Miguel group of companies . Today, San Miguel is exported to more than 35 countries, including Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
