Maiden Stone
The Maiden Stone ( English: Jungfernstein) is an early medieval artifact that is located on the roadside near the town of Inverurie, northwest of Aberdeen ( Eastern Scotland ) .
It is a 3.2 meter high stone slab made of pink granite with carved Pictish and Christian symbols , which is dated to the 8th or 9th century . The stone shows considerable damage. The east side shows several representations, also common on other Pictish symbol stones : a comb , a mirror , a so-called Pictish Beast as well as a stylized centaur and other mythological beings. On the west side there are early Christian motifs , including a cross , as well as a picture of a man between two marine animals - possibly the biblical Jonas and two whales . A spiral-shaped ornament can be seen in the lower area . The two narrow sides are also decorated with ornaments.
