Mailis Reps (born Rand; born January 13, 1975 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian politician . Since November 23, 2016 she has been Minister of Education and Research of the Republic of Estonia. She held the same office in 2002/2003 and from 2005 to 2007.

Life

education

Mailis Reps studied after graduating from high school from 1993 to 1998 at the private Tallinn University University Nord law . In 1996/97 she studied economics in Michigan , 1998/99 law at the Central European University in Budapest and 1999/2000 European relations at the University of Maastricht .

Political activity

In 2000/2001 Mailis Reps was employed by the European Commission (Directorate General Personnel and Administration). Then she turned to politics. She belongs to the Center Party ( Keskerakond ).

From 2003 to 2005 Mailis Reps was a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). From January 2002 to April 2004 she was Minister of Education (since January 1, 2003 Minister of Education and Research) of the Republic of Estonia in the cabinet of Prime Minister Siim Kallas . She then moved back to parliament as a member of parliament.

From April 2005 to April 2007 she was again in the cabinet of Prime Minister Andrus Ansip Minister for Education and Research. Since the Center Party left government, it has returned to parliament. Mailis Reps has been deputy chairwoman of the Center Party since 2005. In 2016 she ran in vain for the office of Estonian President.

Mailis Reps has been Minister for Education and Research of the Republic of Estonia again in the cabinet of Prime Minister Jüri Ratas since November 23, 2016 and retained this post after the 2019 parliamentary elections .

Private

Mailis Reps is married to the Latvian lawyer Agris Repšs. The couple have six children.
