Main ferry Hohenfeld
The former Main Ferry Hohenfeld was a ferry on the Main . It ran between Hohenfeld and the opposite Kitzingen in today's district of Kitzingen . The ferry was abandoned in the second half of the 20th century.
history
The Main ferry probably already existed during the Middle Ages . However, it is not mentioned in the sources from this time. Originally the complex was in the hands of the village lords of Hohenfeld, the barons of Seckendorff . However, it was not mentioned in the village regulations from 1483. At that time the ferry was probably pledged to another noble family. Even in the following centuries, the rulers of the village did not have ferry rights.
It was not until 1662 that the law was triggered by the von Seckendorffs. In the same year they awarded the ferry to the Margraves of Brandenburg-Ansbach . In 1690 the facility fell to the community of Hohenfeld, and the ferry house was also acquired for a loan . The ferry finally came to the private citizen Leonhard Steinbrückner for 270 guilders in 1714 and was henceforth privately owned until the 20th century. In the 18th century the owners changed frequently.
Until 1912, the crossing in Hohenfeld was made with a simple barge ferry. It was not until 1912 that a high ropes course was built . The rope was 246 m long, the ship had a draft of 45 cm and a length of 9.20 m. On January 22, 1924, the ferry was badly damaged by an ice rush and repaired for 1,000 marks. In 1955 it was planned to relocate the Hohenfeld Main Ferry, because the Main was to be expanded into a large shipping route.
This relocation was made in 1956. The ferrymen Christoph and Hans Sack built the new system at Mainkilometer 284,720. At the same time a motor ferry was purchased. In July 1958, the Hohenfeld community again acquired the ferry rights and began leasing the facility . In the same year the ferry was relocated again to Mainkilometer 285,040. In the period that followed, the ferry lost its importance due to its distance from the village and was finally abandoned in the second half of the 20th century.
