The main fisherman

The Mainfischer in Offenbach am Main is a statue and Offenbach's landmark on the Carl Ulrich Bridge . The bronze statue by the Offenbach sculptor Ernst Unger (1889–1954) was originally called “the fisherman” and was erected on July 16, 1935 on the grounds of what was then the Main Bridge , later relocated and restored several times.

Manufacture and execution

Mainfischer detail

Based on a model by Ernst Unger, the figure was first cast in two parts at the Frankfurt art foundry Komo and then joined together. The figure is hollow and has a wall about 7 cm thick. The statue is 2.60 meters high and originally weighed around 900 kilograms.

The bronze statue shows a fisherman in oilskin , boots, southwest with a fishing net and an anchor at his feet. The statue shows a deep-sea fisherman without reference to traditional fishing on the Main. In spite of this, the inhabitants of Offenbach renamed the statue, which was originally just called “The Fisherman”, first into “The Young Fisherman”, then into “Mainfischer”. Since then, the statue has been a traditional symbol of Offenbach, especially in the local press.

Installation and restorations

The Fischer statue was brought from Frankfurt to its installation site on the Offenbach side of the old Main Bridge in a horse-drawn vehicle and was mounted on a pedestal on July 16, 1935. When the old Offenbach-Fechenheim Main Bridge was blown up by Wehrmacht pioneers in the spring of 1945 , the statue was also damaged and overturned. The figure was put up again in the post-war period, and the anchor has not been there since. In the course of the construction work on the northern bypass of the S-Bahn in 1989, the Mainfischer was relocated. In the course of road construction work for the new Carl Ulrich Bridge in 2009, the statue was dismantled for restoration purposes. In December 2011, the statue, restored by the John Lohrmann Stahlhandwerk company in Offenbach-Bieber and again provided with the missing anchor, was placed in a new place at the newly designed crossing in front of the bridge.
