The Mainz blessing is a special form of eucharistic piety that has long been handed down in the history of the diocese of Mainz .

Current practice

With the “Mainz Blessing”, the sacramental blessing with the monstrance is given at the beginning of a Vespers and once more at the end. The ordinances for Holy Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours issued after the Second Vatican Council only provide for the Eucharistic blessing to be given at the end of the respective celebration, so the exception described here is unique. In Mainz Cathedral , this form of blessing is now only given once a year in the monastery vespers on Corpus Christi .

Older practice

Before the reforms associated with the liturgical changes, the form of the Mainz blessing was for the granting of the Eucharistic blessing on Corpus Christi (at High Mass , Vespers and prayer ), on the Sacred Heart Festival and the Sacred Heart Fridays (only if that High Mass took place in front of the exposed Blessed Sacrament), at the devotion on Sacramental Sunday and at all devotions for which exposure had to take place. In addition to Corpus Christi, these were devotions on Christmas , Epiphany , Easter Sunday , Ascension Day , Pentecost Sunday , Christ the King Sunday , Sacred Heart Festival and Sacred Heart Fridays as well as all sacramental devotions.

The Mainz blessing was given at the beginning and at the end of the exposure of the Holy of Holies. According to the regulations issued in 1959, the singing of " Tantum ergo " or another blessing song was prescribed. The blessing was given after the two stanzas were sung. In addition, the Holy of Holies was to be incensed before and after the blessing . At mass, the blessing could also be given in a chasuble , otherwise, as is common practice, a choir cloak was prescribed.
