The Mainzer Stange (also called Schoppeglas ) is a thin-walled, slightly conical wine glass , a rod glass . It has a high (approx. 155 mm) and slim shape (approx. 60 mm diameter , slightly wider towards the opening). From the foot, the bar is flattened polygonally about 60 mm high. Basically the Mainzer Stange has a capacity of 0.4 l. The small diameter and the associated lower oxygen contact keep the wine fresh a little longer and the aroma in the glass.

variants

There are variants with a conical shape and even larger volume (0.5 l) in similar proportions, which the flat structures on the foot only imitate by printing and the glass is much thicker. A special variant of the Mainz bar is the so-called Schoppenstecher glass , into which the sculpture of the Schoppenstecher statue is etched. "Schoppenstecher" is a typical Mainz term for a wine drinker who, in many wine bars, sticks his nose into as many Mainz bars as possible and pricks one bottle after the other .

tradition

Traditionally, Schoppenwein or good consumer quality from Rheinhessen is drunk from the Mainzer Stange . The Honorable Mainz Wine Guild of 1443 undertakes to do its best to ensure that Rheinhessen wine is served as often as possible in the Mainz bar.
