Schoppenstecher still image
The Schoppenstecher statue is located on the edge of the Schillerplatz in Mainz between the Schönborner Hof and the Proviant-Magazin , in the former garden of the Schönborner Hof.
etymology
The name of the drinker shown is derived from Schoppen = to scoop - originally a container for liquids , later a measure of space for drinks meant and to pierce = to drink, enjoy wine regularly and with pleasure .
Schoppenstecher is a typical Mainz term for a wine drinker who sticks his nose into a Mainz pole in one of the Mainz wine taverns at dusk , which is where the expression Schoppe stinge comes from.
Artist
The creator of the statue , so to speak, is the Mainz porcelain manufacturer Heinz Schaubach , who was a member of Die Ehrbare Mainz Wine Guild from 1443 and at the same time the first designer of the guild chronicle. Schaubach donated the bronze monument to the city of Mainz for its 2000th anniversary in 1962.
layout
Mainz Schoppenstecher holds in his right hand the typical Mainz Wine Glass, the cylindrical Mainzer rod , which is used in the wine bars of the city for easy serving wines. The figure embodies the joie de vivre, joie de vivre and humor of the real Meenzer (colloquial for Mainz).
The figure also symbolizes and unites the Völkermühle on the Rhine described by Carl Zuckmayer : Gauls , Romans , Rhine-Franconian elements, Alemannic and Huguenot components and, last but not least, the Jewish elements.
Since 2002, the Schoppestecher has been one of the typical Mainz figures in the Christmas pyramid at the Mainz Christmas market .
Schoppenstecher Prize
A miniature replica of the Schoppenstech statue was first issued in 1973 by the city of Mainz and has been awarded by Rheinhessenwein eV since 1983 for special services to Rheinhessen wine . Hans-Jörg Koch was the 1985 laureate. 1997 laureate: Rainer Brüderle ex-viticulture minister of Rhineland-Palatinate . The Schoppenstecher Prize 2002 was awarded to Reinhard Muth , Honorary President of the German Viticulture Association . It was not until 2008 that the prize was awarded again, this time to Hans-Artur Bauckhage, the former minister for viticulture in Rhineland-Palatinate . The jury justified this with the words: "Made strong with great commitment to increasing the image of our wines ."
