meaning

Witten in Germany 2006

In the period between 1800 and 1815, the French occupation troops dissolved the original territorial and administrative structures of the electoral princes and duchies in the Rhineland and what is now the Ruhr area and restructured them. By amalgamating the aforementioned villages, the French strengthened Witten's importance. Witten already had market rights and was therefore a central point of contact for the farmers in the surrounding villages. The establishment of the mayor's office in Witten also gave it priority administrative importance. After the withdrawal of the French troops, the newly established mayor's office was retained by the Prussian district administration in Arnsberg , but at least the boundaries of the former Mairie Witten were redrawn: Witten was assigned to the newly founded Bochum district in 1815 and henceforth included the communities of Witten, Langendreer, Stockum , Düren , Somborn and Werne . The rural community of Annen-Wullen also emerged from the Mairie Witten in 1815 .
