Mash crutch
The mash crutch (also known as beer crutch , mash log or mash fork ) is a historical tool that was used to stir the mash in the vat when brewing beer . During mashing, brewing malt is mixed with water and heated with constant stirring. While mechanical processes have generally been used since the time of industrialization , the thick mash used to have to be stirred by hand.
