Maison Heinrich Heine

The Fondation de l'Allemagne - Maison Heinrich Heine , also known as the "Heinrich Heine House", is the German house in the Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris . It was built according to plans by the architect Johannes Krahn and opened in 1956. In addition to its function as a student residence, Maison Heinrich Heine is one of the oldest and, with over 150 free events a year, one of the most active German cultural institutions in Paris. Some well-known personalities such as the journalist Peter Scholl-Latour and the political scientist Arnulf Baring stayed here during their studies in Paris. Christiane Deussen has been the director since 2002 .

Dormitory

The Maison Heinrich Heine has 104 dormitory places that are intended for German students and doctoral candidates. In addition, five more rooms are permanently reserved in the neighboring Cambodia House, so that a total of 109 places can be allocated to German candidates per year.

Half of the German applicants will be assigned a place to live in other houses of the Cité universitaire. Due to this principle of brassage , the Maison Heinrich Heine is inhabited approximately half by German and non-German students, whereby the exchange between the different nationalities is to be promoted. Admission is valid for one academic year, but can be extended twice for another year upon request.

Cultural program

The German House in the Cité internationale universitaire de Paris is also a cultural center in which connections to various Parisian institutions of science, culture and the media are maintained. Through the cultural program, Maison Heinrich Heine aims to promote Franco-German cooperation in science, politics, art and culture, convey a lively impression of the cultural life of German-speaking countries and deepen the dialogue in a European and international context. Around 170 events take place annually, including lectures, panel discussions and discussion events with mostly well-known participants on historical, political and literary topics. In addition, poetry readings, exhibitions, scientific seminars and conferences are organized. There are also thematic film cycles and concerts with predominantly young musicians from Germany and France, on which residents of the house often appear.

Library

The library of the Maison Heinrich Heine contains around 20,000 works, mostly in German.

The library at Maison Heinrich Heine has 20,000 media units and is open 13 hours a day (with the exception of the summer break from July to the end of September). The library holdings contain basic literature from and about Germany, important reference works from all disciplines, a large German literature department, German translations of foreign-language literature, basic works from the fields of law, economics and social sciences as well as works from the fields of philosophy, history, art, film and music. In addition, 800 documentaries and feature films are available in German on DVD and 600 music CDs. The newspaper reading room contains around 75 German and French periodicals (daily and weekly newspapers as well as specialist journals - older volumes of these journals are bound in the archive). The library is available free of charge to residents of Maison Heinrich Heine and to anyone with a good command of German. For users from abroad, a one-time deposit of 30 euros is required for the borrowing authorization.

Since autumn 2015 it has been possible to do a voluntary social year at Maison Heinrich Heine through the Franco-German volunteer service for culture. In addition, the Maison regularly offers internships in cultural management and the library, as well as a German language course.
