Bernhard Joseph Schleiss
Bernhard Joseph Schleiß von Löwenfeld, (also Schleis and Schleiss ; born March 24, 1731 in Lauterecken ; died December 9, 1800 in Sulzbach ) was an Electoral Palatinate court and medical councilor and city physician in Sulzbach and author of Masonic - Rosicrucian writings. He is counted among the main members of the Order of the Gold and Rosicrucians in its first phase.
family
Bernhard Joseph Schleiß comes from the family of the royal court chancellor Jacob Schleiß, who was raised to imperial nobility on October 10, 1630 under the name "von Löwenfeld". A Bavarian nobility confirmation for the descendants took place on January 26, 1818 in Munich.
life and work
Schleiß studied medicine in Heidelberg , where he received his doctorate in 1757. In 1758 he took part in the Seven Years' War as a field medic . He was then appointed city and country physicist in Sulzbach and personal physician to Duchess Maria Franziska , electoral medical advisor and finally, in 1760, elector Karl Theodor appointed him to court palatinate.
He is the author of two important defensive documents of the Gold and Rosicrucians.
- The first of these writings was directed against a treatise by Johann Jacob Moser under the title On Patience of Freemason Societies; especially in consideration of the Westphalian Friden in 1776. Under the pseudonym Carl Hubert Lobreich von Plumenoek, Schleiss published in 1777 the writing Ge Offenbarterffekt in the general welfare of the states of the genuine Freymäurerey proven from the true end purpose of their original foundation, and the writing of the Royal Danish Etaatsraths Johann Jacob Mosers, opposed by the tolerance of the Freymäurer societies, especially with the intention of the Peace of Westphalia .
- In 1782 Schleiss published Rosenkreutzer, shining in the light of truth, under the pseudonym Phoebron . The latter text with the subtitle “all dear fellow men, also for the benefit of Magister Pianco” was a public response of the order to the polemic The Rosicrucian in his nakedness: For the benefit of the states put down by doubts against the true wisdom of the so-called real Freemasons or Golden Rosenkreutzer of the old system / by Magister Pianco, relatives in many circles (Amsterdam [= Bauer, Nürnberg] 1781). Hans Karl von Ecker und Eckhoffen , who was excluded from the order in 1780, hid behind the pseudonym Pianco .
The name Phoebron used by Schleiß as a pseudonym appears in the order files as the order name of a chief director of the southern German organizational area. It is difficult to determine exactly when Schleiß had which position in the order. On the one hand it appears "excluded" or tolerated, then again as an exponent of the " Sulzbach Circle " and thus of the order in the time between the Reformations of 1767 and 1777 and for its peculiar combination of alchemy, theosophy , Kabbalah , Freemasonry, which then again such Catholicising trains had that Knigge led, the annulled in gold and Rosicrucians a front organization Jesuit suggest.
Other writings by Schleiß deal with the work of the pastor, miracle healer and exorcist Johann Joseph Gaßner , who was invited by Schleiss to Sulzbach to practice his cures there, and who was defended by him against Lavater's criticism .
