Hans Karl von Ecker and Eckhoffen

Hans Karl (also: Hans Carl ) Freiherr von Ecker and Eckhoffen (on mountain) (born December 26, 1754 in Munich ; † June 22, 1809 in Bamberg ) was a German nobleman, lawyer and author and like his brother Hans Heinrich an active one Freemason and Masonic Writer.

Functions in public life

Ecker was a lawyer in Hamburg and was in the service of Landgrave Karl von Hessen in Schleswig from 1786 . As the lord of the company, he moved in the immediate vicinity of Duke Ferdinand of Braunschweig . After the Duke's death, he moved to southern Germany. He carried the titles of a royal Polish chamberlain, a ducal Brunswick-Lüneburg landdrost and the chancellor of the Order of St. Joachim .

Freemasonry

In 1783, Ecker was one of the founders of a Masonic lodge called Zum Flammenden Stern in Hamburg, which attracted particular attention because it was the first lodge in German-speaking countries to accept Jews ; it was initially not recognized and was considered a " corner box ". From 1787 she was named Ferdinand zum Felsen in honor of Duke Ferdinand of Braunschweig, whose grand lodge she had joined in order to gain Masonic recognition. Ecker was also a member of several high-grade Masonic systems , in particular the Order of Asiatic Brothers , which his brother Hans Heinrich had brought into being; he acted as its chief master, provincial grand master and grand stuart.

As a Masonic writer, he was best known through the play The Freemason in Prison from 1782 (which was also translated into French) and the treatise Will and Can Israelites Be Accepted as Freemasons ? from the year 1788 perceived (see under writings).
