Majuli ( Assamese : মাজুলী Mājulī ) is a river island in the state of Assam in northeast India . About 140,000 people live on the island in Brahmaputra . The 421.65 km² island rises to a height of 84.5 m. Majuli has been the center of Assamese Vishnuism since the 16th century . There are several Hindu monasteries.

Impending flooding

Due to the extensive deforestation of the island, the Brahmaputra gnaws at the shores and has already washed away a third of the area in the last 60 years. The government is working to fortify the banks, but with limited success. The conservationist Jadav Payeng is trying to counteract the floods through targeted reforestation.
