Jadav "Molai" Payeng (* 1963 in Assam ) is an Indian forester and environmental activist from Jorhat.

He gained worldwide media attention after it became known that for decades he had planted trees on a sandbank of the Brahmaputra river every day , and that over the years the barren landscape became a forest reserve. The forest, which has an area of 550 hectares (1360 acres ) and is named after him, is located near the village of Kokilamukh near Jorhat, in Assam, India.

Act

In 1979, the then 16-year-old Payeng met with dried snakes on a sandbar and then decided at that point 20 Bamboo - seedlings to plant.

He continued the work in the same year after the forestry department of the local Golaghat district planned a plan for the afforestation of a 200 hectare area five kilometers away from the village of Kokilamukh. As one of several foresters, Molai implemented the five-year plan. But after the official reforestation was over, he decided on his own to enlarge the area by planting more trees and to maintain the area. A fauna has established itself there with Bengal tigers , Indian rhinos , monkeys , over a hundred deer and rabbits as well as various species of birds such as vultures . With flame flowers , legumes , Asian kapok trees , myrobalans , queen flowers , and bamboos , the latter of which cover an area of 300 hectares, the flora is just as diverse. A herd of 100 elephants is also in the area every six months.
