Hadja Makalé Camara (* 1956 in Mamou ) is a Guinean lawyer, diplomat and politician who served as Guinean Foreign Minister from 2016 to 2017.

Life

Camara was born in Mamou in 1956. In 1980 she graduated from Gamal Abdel Nasser University in Conakry with a master's degree in labor law . She was a Humphrey Fellow .

Camara worked in various positions in the public service from 1980 to 1985. In 1986 she was appointed inspector general at the Ministry of Public Service, responsible for labor law and arbitration between trade unions and employers. From 1991 to 1992 she was a member of the Comité Transitoire de Redressement National (CTRN) , which was involved in drafting a new constitution.

Camara was appointed to the cabinet when Guinea was under military rule, as Secretary of State for Social Affairs, Women's Advancement and Childhood in 1992, and Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Forestry in 1994. From 1997 to 2000 she was Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Office for Labor and Labor and, during the war in Liberia and Sierra Leone, Secretary General of the Réseau des Femmes Africaines Ministres et Parlementaires (REFAMP, network of African ministers) in Guinea.

Camara was appointed Guinea Ambassador to Senegal , Gambia , Cape Verde, and Mauritania in 2002 and served for a five-year term. In 2007, she became the ambassador to France , Spain , Portugal and Morocco and was appointed Guinea's representative at UNESCO , the International Organization of the Francophonie and the International Bureau of Education (English. International Bureau of Education, IBE). She was General Secretary of REFAMP from 2012 to 2015 and campaigned for gender equality.

Camara was appointed Foreign Minister in Alpha Condé's government on January 4, 2016 . She is a member of the national steering committee for the "fight against genital mutilation". On August 22, 2017, Mamadi Touré was appointed Foreign Minister in place of Camara.

Awards and honors

Makalé Camara has been a Knight of the National Order of Merit since July 2008.
