Dürer's role model

The Wilhelminian -style metropolis, which was in full swing, celebrated itself on this occasion. Art, science, trade, commerce, industry paraded, starting from the Prater, across the Jägerzeile (now Praterstrasse) and the newly laid out Vienna Ringstrasse . The forty groups with well over 2,000 participants who formed the historicizing costume parade in Renaissance style designed by the painter Hans Makart met with particular applause . Makart used Albrecht Dürer's illustrations for a Maximilians pageant ( Maximilian I's gate of honor ) as a model. The event benefited from the weather and attracted tens of thousands of onlookers. Numerous artists were involved in the preparation: The triumphal chariot on which the hunting king was enthroned came from the sculptor Zumbusch , who worked for the mining industry in Silbernagel . The floats of the artists and the railways also met with particular interest.
