The Macedonian grave 1 ( Greek Μακεδονικός Τάφος Α΄ ) of Argilos is located on the western outskirts of Sykia about 40 m north of the Ethniki Odos 2 . It was larger and older than the Macedonian Tomb 2 further to the east and was built in the middle of the 4th century BC. Built in BC. It is not known whether the tomb belonged to Argilos, about 400 m to the west, or to Amphipolis about 3 km to the northeast , which had spread to the west bank of the Strymon in the 4th century .

description

Double-leaf marble door
Marble stretcher

Today only parts of the 6 m long and 2 m wide drom and the door arch of the entrance can be seen of the grave . Behind the entrance one entered an antechamber before reaching the main chamber. Under the floor of the main chamber, three rectangular, brick pits were found, which were used to bury the dead. The excavation of the grave took place in 1976 under the direction of the archaeologist Dimitrios Lazaridis. The burial chamber is poorly preserved and could not be explored in detail, as earth kept sliding down from the hill above during the excavation. So it could not be clarified whether the burial chamber was dug into the hill or bricked with stone blocks.

Finds

Nevertheless, some significant finds were made. The broken, double-leaf marble door and parts of a marble bier were found in the antechamber. A mermaid is depicted on the left wing of the marble door and underneath there is a hole where the locking cord was probably attached. The decorations on the bier are reminiscent of the decoration of the ivory bier from the grave of Philip II in Vergina . A marble block with the inscription ΑΡΘΜΙΟΣ ΛΑΙ [...] was also found. The finds are exhibited in the Serres Archaeological Museum .
