In medicine, macroglossia refers to a partial or complete enlargement of the tongue .
causes
Macroglossia can have different causes. Among other things, there are:
- Tumors: hemangioma , lymphangioma , carcinoma
- Infections: thrush , tongue abscess , actinomycosis
- Allergies: Quincke's edema
- Endocrine disorders: acromegaly , hypothyroidism
- Storage diseases: amyloidosis , amyloidosis type Lubarsch-Pick , hyalinosis , Pompe disease , mucopolysaccharidosis
- genetic causes: e.g. B. Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome , Cornelia de Lange syndrome , Duchenne muscular dystrophy , Simpson-Golabi-Behmel syndrome
- Toothlessness: in jaws that have not been fitted with full dentures for a longer period of time .
Concomitant symptoms
A sudden enlargement of the tongue is usually noticed quickly by the affected person. The mass in the oral cavity leads to speech, swallowing and occlusion disorders . With high magnification, the closure of the mouth can be impaired, in extreme cases even breathing.
