Maksud Alichanov, 1907

Maksud Alichanow ( Russian Максуд Алиханов ; born November 23, 1846 in Chunsach , † July 3, 1907 in Alexandropol ) was an Avar general and author who served the Russian Empire and participated in the suppression of the 1905 revolution . At the end of the 19th century he published various books on the Caucasus .

Origin and childhood

Maksud Alichanow came from a Dagestani family that had joined the Russian Empire in the 1830s. A massacre of members of the clan by Gamzat Bek had caused the family to switch sides in the Caucasus War . Alichanov's father had already served in a cavalry regiment of the tsar. Maksud attended high school in Tbilisi , where he also learned Russian. He then attended the Constantine Military School in St. Petersburg , which he graduated in 1864.

Military career

Alichanow was first stationed in Dagestan before he took part in the campaign against the Khiva Khanate in 1871 . For his participation in the Russo-Ottoman War in the years 1877-78 he received a Cross of Merit. In 1879 Alichanow took part in the battle of Geok Tepe, in 1884 in the campaign against Merw . In 1901 he was promoted to major general and transferred to the Caucasus. When unrest and strikes broke out in Baku in the summer of 1903, Alichanov was tasked with suppressing them, which he achieved through a high level of violence.

Revolution of 1905

When the revolution began in the Russian Empire in 1905 , the Tsar lost control of large parts of the Caucasus. In order to quell the unrest, Alichanov was put in charge of the troops in Georgia . On February 18, 1905, Alichanov's forces regained control of Guria and Imereti , and Alichanov took over provisional government in these areas. As a result, he was appointed governor of Kutaisi on February 27, 1905 , where he forcibly restored order.

Alichanov was killed in a bomb attack in Alexandropol in 1907 .

Works

Alichanow wrote various books on the Caucasus, some of which he criticized Gamzat Bek and Imam Shamil . Alichanov also wrote a book about the country of Dagestan, which appeared in 1873 (In the mountains of Dagestan: Journey, impressions and history of the mountains) . In the same year he published another book about his migration to Khiva .
