David Motadel

David Motadel (born December 26, 1981 in Detmold ) is a German historian and publicist . He is an Associate Professor of International History at the London School of Economics and Political Science .

Life

Motadel grew up in Detmold and studied history at the Universities of Freiburg , Basel and Cambridge . During his studies he received a scholarship from the German National Academic Foundation . He received his PhD in 2010 from the University of Cambridge with Richard J. Evans , where he was a Gates Fellow . He then became a Research Fellow in History at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University (2010–2015) and Chancellor's Fellow in History at the University of Edinburgh (2015–2016). As a visiting scholar, he held positions at Harvard (2007/08), Yale (2009/10) and Oxford (2012/13).

Motadel publishes regularly in the New York Times , The Guardian , The Times Literary Supplement , The London Review of Books , Der Spiegel , Süddeutsche Zeitung , Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , Neue Zürcher Zeitung and Zeit Online .

Motadel researches mainly on the history of Europe and its relations to the non-European world. His book on the history of Muslims under German rule in World War II and on the Nazi regime's Islamic policy has received high international acclaim.

According to Armin Fuhrer , Motadel did something "that no historian has done before: Motadel has written a book that comprehensively sheds light on the relationship between National Socialism and Islam".
