The Mount Drum is a stratovolcano in the Wrangell Mountains in Alaska (USA).
The 3661 m high glaciated volcano rises in the extreme west of the mountain range. It is located within Wrangell-St.-Elias National Park . The Glenn Highway , Edgerton Highway and Richardson Highway run along its western flank . The places Copper Center and Glennallen are at the foot of the mountain. The Nadina Glacier flows down the slope on the southwest flank of Mount Drum . To the east, a ridge leads to Mount Zanetti and Mount Wrangell . Mount Sanford is 29 km east-northeast .
The stratovolcano was formed during a period between 650,000 and 240,000 years ago. It is the westernmost in the so-called Wrangell volcanic field . During its last eruption in the late Pleistocene , the southern half of what was then the volcano was blown away. The debris was spread over an area of 200 km².
Heinrich Harrer , Keith Hart and George Schaller made the first ascent on June 7, 1954 .
The mountain was named after Richard Coulter Drum (1825-1909), 1880-1889 Lieutenant General in the US Army.
