The Maksym Salisnjak Oak ( Ukrainian Дуб Максима Залізняка ) is a natural monument in Ukraine . The pedunculate oak was named after the Cossack Maksym Salisnjak and is located near the settlement of Buda in Tschyhyryn Raion in Cherkassy Oblast .

The tree is around 1100 years old, was around 30 meters high in 2013 and has a trunk circumference of almost 9 meters at chest height. Numerous scars from lightning strikes can be seen on the tree . According to later sources, the oak is only 24 meters high.

According to tradition, Hajdamaks gathered under the oak under the leadership of Maksym Salisnjak. Here they would have sworn to fight against Polish dominance without sparing their lives.

In the 1950s, the tree was in very poor condition and was rotting. Since it was also in the way of a power line, it was planned to be felled. Thanks to the work of a head forester, who also came up with the idea of removing the rot by having the affected areas coated with syrup that was cooked on site, which was then fetched by bees, including the rotten areas, the tree was saved. In 1968 the tree was fenced in to protect it, and in the same year the area surrounding its location was declared a national nature reserve. On July 27, 1972, the oak received the status of a natural monument.

In 1997/98 there was a risk that the tree would dry out. Several wells were drilled to irrigate it. For fertilization, dead cows (sic!) Were buried in its root area, the decomposition products of which were supposed to supply it with nutrients.

The oak has been tended twice a year since 2000. It is pruned, dry twigs are removed and it is fertilized. As it is a tourist attraction, a viewing platform has been set up a few meters from the oak, from which one can view the tree without the risk of damaging it.
