Svatovík

Svatovík , also Na Valech, is an early medieval Slavic castle and settlement in the area of the municipality of Veltruby in Okres Kolín in the Czech Republic .

location

Svatovík is located on the right side of the Elbe below the confluence of the Hluboký creek on the Hradišťko I district . Jezeřany lies to the north , Hradišťko I to the southeast and Klavary with the Elbe lock in the south. To the west is the Dolní háj peninsula.

description

The Niederungsburg was built on the left bank of the Elbe on a hill surrounded on three sides by a loop of river. The plant with its teardrop-shaped ground plan had an area of 2.3 hectares and was naturally protected by banks 2–6 m high. It was secured along its entire perimeter by a 2 m thick dry stone wall. The only access was from the southwest, where there was a moat in front of the wall .

As a result of the relocation of the river bed of the formerly strongly meandering Elbe, the facility is now on the right bank of the Elbe; today the Elbe flows at the point of access to the castle. The fortifications are preserved torso. The bushy walls are easily recognizable in the middle of a field.

The complex has been protected as a cultural monument since 1987.

history

Svatovík belonged to a group of fortifications in the Elbe marshes between Libice nad Cidlinou and Kolín , which existed from the younger to the late fortification period, and is the best preserved of these structures. It is believed that it was used between 950 and 1250.

So far only a few archaeological investigations have been carried out, the results of which have only been partially evaluated. The first description of the complex was made in 1875 by J. Vávra. In the years 1889–1890 Josef Ladislav Píč and Jan Hellich carried out superficial examinations on the site of the former acropolis, where they found various shards. In 1962, partial investigations were carried out under the direction of Miroslav Richter, during which stone walls, ceramics and slag were found. In 1990 rescue excavations were carried out in the area of the outer bailey by Jiří Hrála and Zbyněk Sedláček. a. 13 graves, 26 settlement objects , a large stone tablet and a silver denarius from the time of Duke Boleslav II were found. When investigating the western part of the outer bailey for metallic objects lying in the ground, 2012 u. a. discovered a six-point denarius from Regensburg, Heinrich the Quarrel .
