Bennabi went to Paris in 1929 to study engineering. After the occupation of France in World War II , he came to Germany in the summer of 1942, forced by his unemployment, and stayed until 1944. He then stayed in Dreux , France, where he also met his future wife. He worked briefly for the Vichy regime , which is why he and his wife were imprisoned after the American invasion from August 1944 to spring 1945. He then left France in 1956 and did not return to Algeria until 1963 , where he became director of an educational institute. He quit the service associated with this institution in 1967 in order to have more time for his studies. He died in 1973 in Algiers and is buried there in the Sidi M'hamed cemetery.
