Malembo is a village with about 500 inhabitants on the central African Atlantic coast about 30 kilometers from the port city of Cabinda . It lies in the exclave of the same name and belongs to Angola .

history

The village of Malembo was founded in the 1930s by the Portuguese colonial rulers and should not be confused with the historical place of the same name Malembo (Malimba). From the 15th century it was the capital of the Kingdom of Kakongo , which later belonged to the Kingdom of Congo . After its defeat, Malembo temporarily fell to the Netherlands and was a slave shipping port. After 1700, the region around Cabinda experienced a boom due to the trade of Portuguese, English and French ships.

In the 1970s, about 10 kilometers from Malembo, a deep-water port was built by the Cabinda Gulf consortium for the removal of the oil extracted from Cabinda.

administration

Malembo is the seat of a municipality of the same name (Comuna) in the district ( Município ) of Cabinda (city) , in the province of Cabinda . The community has around 500 inhabitants (2010 estimate). From now on, the 2014 census will provide reliable population data.

economy

In Malembo there is a thermal power plant that supplies the town of Cabinda and the small town of Lândana with electricity.

The deep-water port in front of Malembo is important for the region's oil production. The region is the most important oil producing area in Angola.
