The painter's hall was a building in Dresden . It was located in the Wilsdruffer suburb along its entire length on the northern side of the Malergäßchen, the eastern gable wall faced Ostra-Allee . The building existed until 1902 and was then demolished without replacement. In the same year, the property was acquired by the Dresden merchants 'guild for 130,000 marks, and from 1912 onwards the first construction phase of the new Dresden merchants' house was built here .

Construction and use

The painter's hall was built in 1739. It was used for the production and storage of theater decorations, especially for the Opernhaus am Zwinger , built by Pöppelmann directly on the southwest corner pavilion of the Zwinger and opened in 1719 . It was a simple, two-story half - timbered building with a high roof interspersed with numerous bat dormers (also called ox eyes ). In Canaletto's painting “The old moat of the Zwinger, seen from the orangery in the direction of the city”, the painter's hall is clearly visible on the right edge of the picture.

In the years from 1760 to 1769 the painter's hall was used for another purpose besides its actual function. Because of the destruction of the St. Anne's Church in the Seven Years' War , it served as an interim church for the St. Anne's parish during this time.

With the end of the opera house on the Zwinger in the revolutionary days of 1849 and the erection of the opera building on Theaterplatz , the location of the painter's hall was no longer ideal for the intended purposes and it fell into disrepair.

In 1902 the building was finally demolished and the painter's hall was then located in the court theater prop building at Devrientstrasse 16.
