Malmsturm is a German pen & paper role-playing game published by Uhrwerk Verlag . It is based on the Fate-core control system and allows RPG in a fantasy - game world .

Emergence

In the first edition from 2011, Malmsturm presented a set of rules that made the rules of FATE 3 available for the German market for the first time in the form of generic fantasy rules. It was a translated and elaborated version of the System Reference Document for the role-playing game Spirit of the Century. In addition, the volume also contained suggestions on how to play with these rules in the role-playing world of Malmsturm. In the same year the largely rule-free volume of the worlds was published, which comprehensively described the world of Malmsturm, only sketched out in the rule volume.

After the publication of Fate Core, the fourth regular version of Fate (2013 in the USA, 2015 in Germany), the Malmsturm editorial team also started work on a new version of Malmsturm based on Fate Core. In contrast to the first edition, the new rulebook no longer contains the basic rules of Fate Core, but instead contains a lot of background information and exhaustive setting-specific rules for playing in the world of Malmsturm. The rulebook »Malmsturm - Die Fundamente« was published in 2016. A new edition of the world volume is in the works.

The rules

Malmsturm is based on the rules of the universal role-playing game Fate. Changes have been made in the following areas to reflect the Sword and Sorcery genre:

  • The game design from Fate is replaced by a system for group creation, which serves to develop a common concept for a campaign and to network the characters of the players with one another and with the game world.
  • The power level of the player characters has been adjusted for the Sword and Sorcery genre.
  • Rule extensions have been introduced for treasures / loot, artifacts, pets, magic and Malmstürme.

Dramatic reality

The world of Malmsturm is determined by a so-called "dramatic reality". This means that particularly strong or widespread emotions, ideas, rumors, beliefs or unconscious assumptions of intelligent beings have a direct influence on the physical conditions and processes in the world. So there is not only a natural legal necessity to a sunny blue sky over a village wedding celebration, but also to accumulations of bloodthirsty monsters in eerie ruins or thunderstorms during the unholy experiments of a megalomaniac scientist - and also the fist and flesh of a legendary barbarian warrior can be that way steel weapons and armor of nameless mercenaries show more than a match. The possibility of “real” magic in the world of Malmsturm is based on this malleability of dramatic reality through human imagination and willpower. However, the elastic structure of this dramatic reality cannot be deformed indefinitely without problems. Excessive or drastic deviations from the existing “normal” conditions can lead to strange spontaneous changes in local reality, which in extreme cases end in the collapse of this very reality: the uncontrollable chaos of the eponymous Malmsturm.

This concept is very similar to Terry Pratchett's “narrativium” and the TV trope of “Theory of Narrative Causality”. The effects of extremely strong personal beliefs (or delusions) and the influence of elements of a "collective unconscious" Jungian stamp can also be found in the role-playing game Unknown Armies by John Tynes and Greg Stolze .

The world

The world of Malmsturm can be divided into seven regions, three of which are currently well described, while the others have only been sketched out so far.

The North

The interior of the vast northern continent surrounded by a ring mountain. The climatic conditions are reminiscent of the terrestrial ice age, but are moderated locally by strong volcanism and hot springs. The prevailing barbarian tribes are comparable to the Vikings. Larger cities have only formed on the edge of the Sea of ​​Fog, a large inland sea.

The Waismark

A remote peninsula on the southwestern edge of the northern continent with a rather mild, northern to central European climate. The descendants of an abandoned imperial colony live here in a highly fragmented feudal society of small principalities and city-states that are only held together by the common faith of the trisantic church.

The empire

This huge peninsula is only connected to the south-east of the northern continent by a narrow land bridge, the so-called "dragon". In the midst of ever-expanding deserts, the ancient metropolises of a former world empire are dawning with imperceptible slowness and complete decadence towards their doom.

Gomgarka

A mysterious island continent on the equator, far south of the Waismark, covered by steaming jungles and hostile deserts. Primeval monsters and huge insects are said to rule this land.

Narakaná

A volcanic ash desert in the middle of a huge mountain basin on the southern edge of the northern continent, practically unknown in the rest of the world and allegedly inhabited by monstrous humanoids who are reminiscent of devils in person.

Dhelyria

Tens of thousands of small islands along the eastern equator. The east, inhabited by peaceful savages, still serves the empire as a source of slaves and exotic drugs. The western islands, which are said to have been shaped by corsairs and undersea ruins, are rarely visited by foreign ships.

Okolnir

A lonely wide basin in the extreme northeast of the northern continent. A “white spot” on the map that is expressly reserved for the design by individual game masters and game rounds and will not be described in any future publication.

Malmsturm and Metal

Malmsturm is closely interwoven with the (sub) culture of metal . This is clearly recognizable, for example, from the Malmsturm logo, which was designed by Christophe Szpajdel , who has already designed over 7000 logos for death and black metal bands. The illustrations by Björn Lensig are heavily inspired by metal album covers in the color selection of the layout, the roots can be found in Metal:

"The basis of the colors is based on my habit, which mainly consists of band patches of these colors."

The proportions of the new layout also attempt to translate the tritone frequently used in metal , ie the “diabolus in musica”, into a graphic form, the “diabolus in paginis”.

Malmsturm - Lands of the Storm was awarded the Bronze Stephan in the category of role-playing expansion in 2018 at the Golden Stephan.
