designation

(2168) Swope was after the American astronomer Henrietta Hill Swope (1902–1980), who was known through her work on the distances between nearby galaxies , one of her most famous research results was the calculation of the distance to the Andromeda Galaxy . From 1928 to 1942 she was an assistant at the Harvard College Observatory and from 1952 to 1968 at the Mount Wilson Observatory and the Palomar Observatory . In 1968 she received the Annie Jump Cannon Prize for Astronomy and in 1975 an honorary doctorate from the University of Basel . The 1-meter Swope telescope at the Las Campanas Observatory was also named after her. The name was suggested by the American astronomer Frank K. Edmondson .
