Mamadou Diop (* 1949 ) is a Nigerien politician and bank manager .

Life

Mamadou Diop comes from the Zinder region in Niger . He attended the Lycée national de Niamey , followed by training in France . Diop began his banking career at Banque internationale pour l'Afrique occidentale (BIAO) before moving to the West African Central Bank (BCEAO) in Dakar , Senegal in the late 1970s . In 1984 he became director of the National Agency for Niger of the West African Central Bank in Niamey . In this role, he replaced his mentor Boukary Adji , who had been appointed finance minister of Niger .

During the National Conference of 1991, which carried out a democratic reorganization of Niger after the rule of the Supreme Military Council , Diop was considered a candidate for the office of Prime Minister . He was later politically close to the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism (PNDS-Tarayya), but did not become a member of the party. In 1997, he returned to the headquarters of the Central Bank of West Africa in Dakar, where he held successive roles as advisor to the central bank governor, director of the finance department, general secretary of the banking commission and special advisor to the central bank governor.

Diop was entitled to retire from 2009. After Mahamadou Issoufou was elected president of the Nigerien Party for Democracy and Socialism in 2011 , he brought Diop to the post of lieutenant governor of the West African Central Bank, which was due to Niger. Here Diop prevailed against the former incumbent Ali Badjo Gamatié . His term of office was extended for a further five years in 2013. In 2018, the post of lieutenant governor was transferred to a candidate chosen by Senegal. In 2019, President Issoufou appointed Mamadou Diop to succeed Hassoumi Massoudou as Niger’s finance minister.
