Mammillaria kraehenbuehlii is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet honors the Swiss cactus specialist and connoisseur Felix Krähenbühl (1917–2001) from Arlesheim near Basel.

description

Mammillaria kraehenbuehlii grows low and forms dense groups. The first spherical, later cylindrical shaped shoots are soft fleshed and 3 to 12 centimeters high and reach a diameter of 3.5 centimeters. The tapering to conical warts do not contain any milky sap . The axillae are bare. The central spine is pointed brown and 0.5 to 1 centimeter long. Sometimes the central spine is missing entirely. The 18 to 24 radial spines are very thin, chalky white with a brown tip, curved and interlocking. They are 3 to 8 millimeters long.

The lilac-carmine red flowers are up to 1.8 centimeters long. The dark carmine-red fruits contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria kraehenbuehlii is widespread in the Mexican state in Oaxaca in the valley of Tehuacan-Cuicatlán. It was first described in 1970 as Pseudomammillaria kraehenbuehlii by Hans Krainz . A year later he introduced the species to Mammillaria .

Synonyms are Pseudomammillaria kraehenbuehlii Krainz (1970) and Escobariopsis kraehenbuehlii (Krainz) Doweld (2000).

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Least Concern (LV) ", i. H. listed as not endangered.
