Man or Astro-man? is a surf rock band from Auburn, Alabama, founded in 1992 . The band plays primarily instrumental surf rock and garage rock in the style of the 1960s, which they combine with elements from the New Wave of the 1970s and punk rock from the 1980s.
In terms of content, the band often makes use of science fiction - B-movies from the 1950s and 1960s. The band name comes from a film poster for the Japanese film The Human Vapor from 1960.
history
Man or Astro-man? was founded at the beginning of the 1990s by three students and was very much influenced by surf music interpreters such as Dick Dale , Link Wray or The Ventures . The band played many concerts in the Southeast of the USA right from the start and began to mix their music with other styles such as garage rock, new wave and punk rock.
The record company Estrus Records finally became aware of the band in 1993 and offered them a recording contract and released the debut album Is it… Man or Astro-Man? and later Destroy All Astro-Men! as well as Project Infinity and some EPs .
Thanks to long tours and countless concerts, the band slowly became known in Europe and switched to Touch and Go Records , which the band promoted very strongly in Europe. In 1996 the album Experiment Zero, recorded in three days, was produced as the first result of this cooperation and the band began to enrich their sound again with new elements. The use of samples, homemade instruments and electronic devices meant another change in the band and the music.
This was followed by many singles in 1997, the EP 1000X and the album Made from Technetium as well as EEVIAC in 1999 and the last release on Touch and Go Records A Spectrum of Infinite Scale in 2000 . There were no new releases for the next thirteen years until the band released the album Defcon 5… 4… 3… 2… 1 on the Communication Vessels label in 2013, followed by a concert tour.
