Manaichmos

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manaichmos ( Greek  Μάναιχμος Mánaichmos ) was an ancient Greek philosopher ( Platonist ). His lifetime is unknown.

Manaichmos is known only from a brief entry in the Suda , a Byzantine encyclopedia, dealing with him . According to the Suda, he came either from Alopekonnesos, a city on the Gallipoli peninsula , or from the Marmara island (Greek Prokonnesos ). Therefore he is also called Manaichmos of Alopekonnesos . According to the Suda entry, he wrote philosophical works, including a commentary on Plato's Dialogue Politeia in three books.

Research has attempted, without resounding success, to identify him with other attested persons named Menaichmos (Μέναιχμος), especially with the well-known mathematician Menaichmos , a friend of Plato. The equation with the mathematician was proposed as early as the 19th century. It was represented in the 20th century in particular by François Lasserre , who on this basis made a number of assumptions about the Politeia commentary, but his hypothesis was not able to prevail. The counter-argument is that the author of the Suda entry only knows Manaichmos as a philosopher and Plato commentator and not as a mathematician.
