Bruno Mauricio de Zabala
Bruno Mauricio de Zabala (born October 6, 1682 in Durango , Spain ; † January 31, 1736 in the Río Paraná ) was a Spanish military man who held various positions within the colonial administration.
He was born in the then suburb of Zabala on the outskirts of the city of Durango in the province of Biscay . His birthplace, the Palacio de los Zabala , has been preserved there to this day.
He took part in the War of the Spanish Succession on the side of Philip V of Anjou and was appointed Capitán General del Río de la Plata (Governor of the Río de la Plata) on July 11, 1717 . He held this position until 1734. As such, he took up the fight against piracy and was also confronted with the Portuguese who intended to secure supremacy on the banks of the Río de la Plata . In order to secure the region from the attacks of the Portuguese, he built a fortress in 1726, which formed the cornerstone for the foundation of the later Uruguayan capital Montevideo .
The Plaza Zabala in Montevideo is named after him.
