The Manas is a right tributary of the Brahmaputra in Bhutan and in the Indian state of Assam .
The Manas drains the eastern part of Bhutan. Its tributaries originate in the Himalayas , partly in the Tibet Autonomous Region . The Manas arises in the south of Bhutan not far from the Indian border at the confluence of the Drangme Chhu and Mangde Chhu . The river name is derived from the Hindu snake goddess Manasa . The Manas flows south through the Manas National Park in Assam . The Manas finally flows into the Brahmaputra near Chandmama Pathar . The river has a length of 376 km including the headwaters. 104 km of the river is on Indian territory. The catchment area covers 41,350 km². The river water of the Manas is partly diverted for irrigation purposes .
