Orcadas station building on the Manchón Austral

The Manchón Austral ( Spanish ) is a largely flat and wide isthmus of dark rubble off Laurie Island in the archipelago of the Southern Orkney Islands . It separates the head ends of Uruguay Cove and Scotia Bay . The strip of land is the location of the Argentine Orcadas station .

Argentine scientists named it after the Austral , better known by its previous name Français as the ship of the Fourth French Antarctic Expedition (1903-1905) under the direction of the polar explorer Jean-Baptiste Charcot .
