The 1968 than C-Class built ship class of the British shipping company Manchester Liners was a series of four container ships of the second generation. The units were among the first British container ships at the time.

history

The series of this type of ship from the Smiths Dock Company shipyard in Middlesbrough initially consisted of four units of the original C-Class, which were followed by two identical replicas in 1974.

The first four ships served the shipping company's Europe-North America service from 1968, the two replicas were initially chartered for four years to the shipping company China Navigation Company and used in Asia on their Australian Asian Express Line.

Not long after the parent company Furness, Withy & Co. was taken over by CY Tung in 1980, and with the incorporation of Manchester Liners into the parent company, the company lost its former independence. The C-class ships were sold from 1978 to 1982 and the shipping company was discontinued in 1988.

technology

The full container ships had superstructures arranged aft above the machinery. The five holds were equipped with cell guides and closed with 14 hatches . The units did not have their own loading gear. Because of the sailing area, the ships had an ice class and an ice observation cabin with a camera in the front mast. Notable details were maintenance corridors that led to the front below deck or a separate hatch with two parking spaces in front of the deck superstructure for a provisions and a spare parts container, which were renewed every trip.

The propulsion system consisted of two Pielstick 18PC2V-400 eighteen-cylinder four-stroke V-shaped engines built by Crossley in Manchester, which operated via hydraulic clutches on a common variable pitch propeller . Their output of around 12,000 kilowatts allowed the ships to travel at 19.5 knots. The on-board energy was provided by four auxiliary diesels. In Manchester, the ships were supplied with electricity via shore connections while the machinery was maintained and repaired.
