The Evangelical Lutheran Mandal kirke (Mandal Church) is a wooden church in Mandal , Lindesnes municipality in Fylke Agder , Norway . With 1,800 seats it is the largest wooden church and one of the largest wooden buildings in Norway. The church was built after the great fire of Mandal in 1810 and consecrated in 1821. Before the fire, a stone church from the 15th century stood on the old market square, where the former city center was.

Architectural style

The church was built by the architect Jørgen Gerhard Løser in the Empire style , which can be assigned to classicism . This style emphasizes the purity and simplicity with models from Greek and Roman architecture . It is also Norway's first monumental building after independence from Denmark . The walls consist of a half - timbered frame filled with bricks and although they only have wood paneling, the church is one of the wooden buildings. The spans of the wooden structure are unusually large and well executed. Due to the simple architectural style, the interior received only a few decorations. This is divided by two colossal rows of columns into the main nave and two side aisles, over which a U-shaped gallery runs. Opposite this is the altar cross over which the cylindrical pulpit is located. The baptismal font is made of marble.

organ

The organ was installed in 1923 and comes from the organ builder Oscar Wacker (company W. Sauer, Frankfurt / Oder ). It is a pneumatic organ with 1500 pipes and 32 voices .
