Manduca ochus is a butterfly ( moth ) from the family of moth (Sphingidae). Manduca ochus wasfirst describedby Klug in 1836.

features

The moths have a wingspan of about 120 millimeters. The basic color of the top of the forewings is cinnamon brown. The front wings have a very irregularly defined dark gray pattern on the front edge. These characteristics make the species easy to distinguish from the other species of the genus Manduca . On the forewings there are also two pairs of black points in the submarginal region and a row of black points marginally, i.e. on the outer edge of the wing. The top of the head and thorax are cinnamon and orange, respectively. The palps are similar to those of Manduca rustica . On the first phalanx of the tarsi of the forelegs, there are five or six comparatively long, moderately strong, and several smaller spurs. Pulvilli are absent. Lines, more closely arranged hairs (cilia) are clearly visible on the antennae of the females.

distribution and habitat

The species occurs from Mexico, Belize and Nicaragua to Venezuela and probably Ecuador. In Costa Rica, Manduca ochus is known from various habitats below 700 meters above sea level. They very rarely come to light.

Way of life

The species probably forms two or three generations per year, at least in Costa Rica, so the moths are found most of the year. However, they are less common in the driest months, February to March and July. The larvae presumably feed on the nightshade family (Solanaceae).
