Manfred Kirchgeßner

Manfred Kirchgeßner (born May 21, 1929 in Richtstetten , Republic of Baden , † January 2017 ) was a German nutritional and animal physiologist .

Kirchgeßner studied agricultural science at the University of Hohenheim and chemistry for the subject of nutritional physiology at the University of Stuttgart . He initially worked for Werner Wöhlbier at the Institute for Animal Nutrition at the University of Stuttgart-Hohenheim and qualified as a professor in 1959. With Venia legendi for nutritional physiology and feeding theory, he was a private lecturer in Hohenheim until he was appointed to Weihenstephan.

From 1961 until his retirement in 1997 he held the chair for nutritional physiology and animal nutrition at the Technical University of Munich in Freising-Weihenstephan. He has authored several books, published over 1500 original scientific papers and 150 reviews in national and international journals. Over 150 doctoral students and 22 post-doctoral students have gone through his supervision .

He has been honored with seven honorary doctorates in agricultural sciences, veterinary medicine, medicine, chemistry and life sciences from European, Asian and US universities.

Manfred Kirchgeßner was elected a member of the Leopoldina in 1983.
